Lawrence Fruit Tree Project

Sharing Fruit, Sharing Knowledge

Lawrence Fruit Tree Project was formed in 2008 as a community-based solution to food insecurity. Through this program we educate, assist, and inspire the public to plant, steward and use perennial food plants. LFTP is building community, increasing local food security, and creating connections between people and their urban environment.

In 2012 LFTP created Lawrence Community Orchard. LCO is a free food park where anyone can pick ripe fruit! The land was made accessible through the City of Lawrence urban agriculture land leasing program Common Ground. The creation and maintenance of the orchard is possible only through the work of many dedicated volunteers.

LCO occupies 4/5 of an acre in the Burroughs Creek corridor of East Lawrence. It is currently planted with over 100 individual productive woody plants composed of around 30 species. It also includes a fruit tree nursery, kiosk, supply shed, botanical labels and a picnic table. LCO is located at 830 Garfield st. LCO is open to the public dawn to dusk every day.

Join us for monthly Community Orchard Days March-November. Typically the first Saturday of each month. Sign up for LFTP news and volunteer schedule emails here.
